“It was fascinating to see which parts of the collection appealed to the students and why….I particularly liked Helen’s response to a Lucie Rie pot.”

sgraffito

Helen was drawn to the sgraffito lines on a bowl by pioneering potter Lucie Rie and wanted to reflect these in a design for a light.

Dame lucie rie

She recalled a photograph, taken by Lord Snowdon, of a diminutive Rie, sitting next to a large moon jar.

moon jar

The moon jar, belonged to Bernard Leach, known as the father of British Studio pottery. He purchased the traditional Korean storage vessel in Seoul and said that owning it was like ‘carrying a little piece of happiness’. He asked Rie to look after it for him - which she did for more than 50 years. It is now in the British Museum.

inspiration

This inspired Helen to create a range of porcelain lights combining the iconic shape of the moon jar with Rie’s signature sgraffito marks.
